In anticipation of their robot wars competition in May, we continue to 3D print bots. Today, we began the assembly process. With the help of our favorite computer science students from Southern State, our 6th-grade STEM students began wiring their battle bots. They learned to solder custom cables to wire the electronics needed for the bot to move. #IgniteInspireInstill

STEM students engaged with engineering, architecture, & history through the context of the World Fair & Eiffel Tower. Students strengthened their measurement skills by reading a blueprint to create their own Eiffel Tower model and helping them understand how dimensions and proportions are translated from a blueprint to a physical structure. Custodial staff collaborated when Mr. Dotson thoughtfully provided the blueprints of our school for the students to explore—allowing them to see real-world application of blueprints and build an understanding of how buildings are designed and constructed. #IgniteInspireInstill

Last week in STEM Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd graders learned about scissor lifts used on large building projects. They used the same principles of engineering to solve a problem at school. We needed a cleaner way to pick up garbage on the floor. Students learned when you pull the ends of an “X” apart, your scissor lift contracts (all the X’s get shorter and squished). When you push the ends of an “X” together, the scissor lift extends (all the X’s get tall and skinny). If they correctly measured their pieces of cardboard, it should extend to roughly twice its original length. #IgniteInspireInstill
